SEA LIFE London Aquarium

Sightseeing attraction | London | England | United Kingdom

Largest aquarium in London

The SEA LIFE London Aquarium in London is one of the largest and most impressive aquariums in Europe, and a fascinating attraction that transports visitors into the wonders of the underwater world. Opened in 1997, it is located in a historic building right on the Thames and attracts hundreds of thousands of people annually who want to discover the diversity of marine life. As part of the global SEA LIFE chain operated by Merlin Entertainments, the aquarium combines entertainment with education and conservation by showcasing over 500 marine species from around the world - from tropical coral reefs to the cold waters of the Antarctic.

Underwater world for families

The history of the SEA LIFE London Aquarium began with the desire to create a modern showcase for the oceans that appeals to both families and science enthusiasts. It was established in the former County Hall building, a magnificent structure from the 1920s that was once the seat of the London administration. The transformation of this historic site into an aquarium was an ambitious project that combined the technical challenges of underwater architecture with the aesthetics of a listed building. Since its opening, it has established itself as one of London's top attractions, offering an immersive journey through the depths of the seas.

Interactive experiences at the aquarium

A central highlight of the aquarium is the "Ocean Tunnel," a glass underwater tunnel that takes visitors through a huge tank where sharks, rays, and tropical fish swim over and around them. This 180-degree experience gives the feeling of being underwater and showcases impressive species such as the sand tiger shark or the majestic green sea turtles. The main tank, known as the "Pacific Ocean Tank," is one of the deepest in the UK and was specially designed to replicate the ecosystems of the oceans, with artificial currents and a variety of plants that support the natural habitat.

Conservation programs at SEA LIFE

The aquarium is divided into several thematic zones representing different marine environments. The "Atlantic Ocean" area showcases creatures like jellyfish and seahorses, whose delicate movements are highlighted in illuminated tanks. "Rainforests of the World" takes visitors into the humid habitats of rivers and swamps, with piranhas, crocodiles, and poisonous dart frogs illustrating the connection between water and land. The "Penguin Point" is a lovingly designed home for a colony of gentoo penguins, who splash around in a cool environment with ice and snow and can be observed through an underwater window. This diversity makes each zone its own little world, intriguing and informative.

Visit SEA LIFE aquarium

In addition to the impressive wildlife, the SEA LIFE London Aquarium is strongly committed to conservation. It supports breeding programs for endangered species, such as sea turtles, and works with organizations to combat marine pollution and raise public awareness about ocean protection. Interactive displays and talks by staff explain the threats to marine life, such as plastic pollution or climate change, and show how visitors can make a difference. This educational offering is a key part of the aquarium's mission and sets it apart from purely entertainment venues.

For visitors, the SEA LIFE London Aquarium offers a multisensory experience. The subdued lighting, the gentle splashing of water, and the vibrant colors of the fish create a calming, almost meditative atmosphere. There are numerous interactive elements, such as touch pools where children can gently touch starfish or crabs, and daily feedings where animal keepers provide insights into the behavior of the animals. For families, there are also events like "Shark Week" or "Mermaid Shows" to spice up the seasonal program.

The location of the aquarium near the Thames and within sight of the London Eye and Big Ben makes it an ideal stop on a city exploration. The building itself is an architectural contrast: the classic facade interacts with the modern technology inside, where huge tanks and tunnels unfold an underwater world. It is a place that celebrates the beauty and fragility of the seas while also reminding us to protect them.

Great as always, the aquarium is full of facts. It was very busy being on the weekend but still a great day out.

In and out within 30 minutes of entry, to many people let in at once meaning overcrowding around the tanks. Just as big as your average sea life center found around England looks alot bigger from the outside. Just bigger tanks. Fair section is just wasted with interactive projected games on the wall or projected fish. Staff are helpful and friendly. security procces upon entering was nice and simple no long queues. Might be more suited to a family rather than late twenties couple felt a bit ripped off paying £66 pound for 2 adults and that was using hello tickets sea life wanted alot more. Always check 3rd party ticket sites for the best deal.

Unfortunately very few of the species are not local to Southwark or the wider metropolitan area. No doubt this has caught many unsuspecting visitor off guard. Fortunately it was a beautiful day outside, so we had the place to what felt like ourselves.

The Aquarium feels more like a Disney ride than a traditional aquarium. Some tanks and sections are excellent from a biodiversity and layout perspective, but the price to experience ratio is quite low. The entire aquarium is crowded, they have vendors everywhere hawking everything from boba tea to face painting, and it was often a struggle to even get a view into a tank due to density of guests.

Great experience 🌟 our kids (5 and 2) absolutely loved it and were amazed by the sea life. We’ve been there for around 2 hours and there was so much to see.

Love the Aquarium but once again the penguin section was closed and of course you need to take out a mortgage to pay for tickets.

May be i have been to too many aquarium in another countries and that affects my feedback but this aquarium does not deserve the amount of money anyone spend on the tickets. Got less variety and small tanks. I saw very big fishes stuck in small tanks...which is very brutal and cruel. I hope the management read my review and consider that those big fishes need big tanks so they can actually enjoy whatever life they have in there. I felt bad for them.
